Choosing CCTV for Residential and Small Business Use in Cape Town
CCTV has quietly become standard equipment on Cape Town properties. What used to be a high-end add-on is now expected at almost every home and small business. The technology has matured, the prices have come down, and the choice of options has expanded to the point where most buyers cannot easily tell which system is the right fit for their property. This is a practical guide to the decisions that actually matter, based on what holds up in real-world use across the suburbs of Cape Town.
What good CCTV is supposed to do
A working camera system delivers four outcomes:
- Deterrence: a visible camera changes the calculus of an opportunistic intrusion
- Evidence: a clear recording of an event the owner needs to refer back to
- Real-time visibility: remote viewing of the property from a phone or tablet
- Integration with the wider security stack: alarms, gate motors, electric fencing, monitored response
A system that delivers on the first three but not the fourth is a partial system. A system that delivers all four is what modern security looks like.
Camera count and placement
The conversation about resolution and brand is meaningless without a proper conversation about where the cameras go. The standard residential layout for a typical Cape Town three or four bedroom home:
- One camera on the front gate or driveway, framing the approach
- One or two cameras covering the front of the house, including the main entrance
- One camera on each side of the property, watching the gables and side gates
- One or two cameras at the rear, covering the garden, pool area and back door
- One camera inside the front entry or living area, often hidden, for indoor coverage
That is 6 to 8 cameras for a typical home. Smaller homes manage with 4. Bigger plots or homes with outbuildings need 10 to 16. For small businesses, the count depends on the floor plate and the number of entry points, with both customer-facing and back-of-house coverage.
The mistake to avoid is pointing all cameras outward and missing the indoor common areas. If something does get past the perimeter, an internal camera is what records the activity.
Resolution: how much is enough
Resolution is the headline spec, and the easiest one to be oversold on. The working tiers:
- 1080p (Full HD, 2 megapixel): the baseline. Good for general surveillance at sensible distances. Number plates legible at close range.
- 2K (4 megapixel): the modern standard. Sharper detail, more usable digital zoom, better in low light.
- 4K (8 megapixel): premium. Significant storage overhead. Mostly worth it for wide-area cameras where every pixel matters.
For most residential uses, 2K is the sweet spot. Sharper than 1080p, less storage and bandwidth hungry than 4K, and the price difference from 1080p is now minimal. For a small business, 2K is the right baseline for most areas, with 4K on the cash counter, front door and any high-value zones.
Wired versus wireless
The choice has tightened. Wired remains the gold standard for permanent installations on the main house. Wireless has become genuinely viable for cottages, holiday homes, smallholdings and temporary deployments.
Wired
Most reliable, highest sustained bandwidth, no battery management, power-over-ethernet (PoE) reduces cabling. Best for new builds and properties where cable routing is feasible. The standard choice for a primary CCTV install on a main residence.
Wireless
Useful where cabling is impractical or expensive. Modern wireless cameras have improved significantly in stability, battery life and low-light performance. Wireless cameras live or die by Wi-Fi coverage. A camera at the far corner of the plot only works if it has a stable signal. Mesh Wi-Fi or dedicated wireless bridges may be needed to cover the property.
Storage: NVR versus cloud
Where do the recordings live?
Network Video Recorder (NVR)
A dedicated device that records all cameras locally onto hard drives. Most reliable, full control over retention, no monthly subscription, footage stays on the owner's site. The standard for any serious installation. Typically holds 7 to 30 days of continuous recording depending on disk size, camera count and resolution.
Cloud storage
Footage uploaded to the camera manufacturer's cloud platform. No on-site device required, accessible from anywhere, survives a break-in that takes the recorder. Monthly subscription cost, dependent on internet uptime, and the owner trusts the cloud provider with the data.
The right answer for most installations is hybrid: NVR on site for continuous high-resolution recording, with select cameras backing up event clips to cloud as a redundant store. Belt and braces.
Night vision and low light
South Africa is more often dark than the marketing photos suggest. Streetlights fail. Driveway lights get switched off. Power goes out. Night performance matters more than day performance in many use cases.
The major options:
- Infrared (IR) night vision: black and white image, range 10 to 30 metres depending on camera. Standard on most cameras. Effective and unobtrusive (IR is invisible to the human eye).
- Colour night vision: keeps colour at low light levels using sensitive sensors. Needs some ambient light. Useful where colour identification matters (clothing, vehicle colour).
- White light spotlight: triggered on motion, lights up the area and switches the camera to colour. Effective deterrent, can be intrusive in residential settings.
For perimeter cameras, IR with a 30 metre range is the workhorse. For driveway and entrance cameras, colour night vision with a spotlight is the strongest combination.
Remote viewing and mobile apps
Remote viewing is now standard. Every reputable camera brand has a mobile app that connects to the NVR or cloud and gives the owner live and recorded view from anywhere with internet. The differences between brands are in:
- App stability and reliability over time
- Speed of live view loading
- Quality of motion detection and notification
- Number of simultaneous users supported
- Sharing controls (multiple family members, business owners, staff)
Pick a brand with a mature app and a track record of supporting older firmware. Cheap unbranded cameras often arrive with apps that work for a year and then stop being updated.
Integration with the wider security stack
CCTV on its own is a recording system. CCTV integrated with an alarm, gate motor, electric fence and monitored response becomes a security platform.
Useful integrations include:
- Alarm trigger pushes the camera to record and notify the owner
- Gate motor activation records who entered and when
- Electric fence alarm switches the camera covering that zone to high-resolution recording
- Monitored response company has access to the camera feed during an event
- Smart home integration with lighting, intercom and access control

Power backup

- Site survey and camera placement plan
- Cable routing through ducting, with no exposed runs
- Power supply and surge protection
- NVR configuration including retention periods, motion zones and recording schedules
- Mobile app setup for the owner and any sharing
- Test of every camera view and every alarm trigger
- Handover documentation with all login credentials, network setup and emergency contacts
Ongoing maintenance covers lens cleaning, focus check, motion zone tuning, firmware updates and replacement of any failing components. CCTV that is installed and forgotten degrades quietly over a year or two and is half the deterrent it should be.
