Choosing the Right Massage at Avara Spa: A Cape Town Treatment Guide

Walking into a spa menu and trying to pick a massage on the spot is harder than it should be. The names sound similar, the durations vary, and most people end up booking whatever they had last time. At Avara Spa we would rather you arrive knowing what you actually want, so this guide walks through our current massage menu - what each treatment is for, how long it takes, what it costs, and which add-on enhancers are worth the extra few rand.

The shorter, focused massages

If you carry tension in one specific area, a focused 30 or 60 minute massage gets you more relief per minute than a full body session. We offer three on the menu:

  • Back, Neck and Shoulder (BNS) - the most requested treatment in both branches. The therapist works through the upper trapezius, rhomboids, neck and shoulders, where most desk-bound and driving-related tension lives.
  • Foot and Leg - calves, soles and lower legs. Excellent for runners, anyone on their feet all day, and clients who travel by air.
  • Head Massage - scalp, temples, neck and jaw. Pairs well with sinus or tension headaches and helps clients who struggle to switch off mentally.

All three are available in 30 minutes (R350) or 60 minutes (R490). The 30 minute is enough if you have one tight zone you want addressed; the 60 minute lets the therapist work more slowly and includes a longer warm-up.

Full body relaxation: Swedish

The 60 minute Full Body Swedish Massage (R550) is our go-to for clients whose goal is general relaxation rather than treating a specific complaint. Long, flowing strokes, lighter pressure than deep tissue, and full coverage from feet to neck. It is the right choice if you are stressed, sleep-deprived, or simply want an hour of switching off.

Swedish does not address chronic tight knots the way deep tissue does. If you came in with a specific muscle problem, we would steer you toward deep tissue or a focused BNS instead.

Deep Tissue

Our 60 minute Deep Tissue (R590) uses firmer, slower pressure that reaches the deeper muscle layers and connective tissue. It is the right call for:

  • Chronic tension that does not respond to lighter pressure
  • Old injuries that flare up under stress
  • Athletes and gym regulars carrying delayed-onset soreness
  • Anyone who has tried Swedish before and felt it was "too gentle"

Deep tissue can be uncomfortable in places. We work within your tolerance and check pressure throughout the session. It is normal to feel mildly sore for 24 to 48 hours afterwards, similar to a good gym session.

Massage enhancers

For an extra R50 you can add either of the following to any massage:

  • Hot Stones - heated basalt stones placed and worked along the muscles. The heat softens fascia and lets the therapist reach deeper without increased pressure. A good choice on cold days or for clients who find deep tissue too intense.
  • Cupping Therapy - silicone cups create gentle suction along tight bands. Useful for chronic upper back tension, post-exercise recovery and stubborn knots that respond poorly to direct pressure. Some clients see temporary circular marks for a few days; this is normal and not a bruise.

Which one should you book?

A few short rules of thumb we tell new clients:

  • Stressed and tired with no specific pain - Full Body Swedish 60
  • Stiff neck and shoulders from desk work - BNS 60 with hot stones
  • Trained hard this week, feeling beat up - Deep Tissue 60 with cupping
  • Tension headache or jaw clenching - Head Massage 30
  • Standing or walking all day - Foot and Leg 30
  • First time, want to try a spa - BNS 30 as a starter, then upgrade next visit

Daily deals to know about

Our weekly specials run year-round at both branches. The one that affects massage bookings most often is Thursday Time Out - 20% off all massages. Friday Facials adds a free head, neck and shoulder massage to any facial booking, which is a good way to stack a focused massage into a longer skin appointment.

Booking and locations

Avara Spa runs two Cape Town branches - Knightsbridge Towers, Century City and Old Mutual, Pinelands. Both branches offer the full massage menu. Bookings can be made on our online booking page or by phoning the spa on 079 050 6816. If you are unsure which treatment fits your day, mention what you are dealing with when you book and reception will guide the choice.
