Industrial Waterjetting: How High-Pressure Water Replaces Sandblasting and Chemical Cleaning

For decades, the standard ways to clean a piece of industrial equipment were to throw chemicals at it, sandblast it, or send people in with scrapers and brushes. All three have real downsides. Chemicals are expensive, hazardous and create disposal problems. Sandblasting damages surfaces, generates dust that travels everywhere, and uses media that has to be cleaned up afterwards. Manual cleaning is slow, labour-intensive and inconsistent. The technology that has quietly replaced much of this work in modern industrial maintenance is high-pressure waterjetting.

What waterjetting is

Waterjetting uses pressurised water, usually with no abrasive media added, delivered through specialised nozzles to clean, cut or prepare surfaces. The water does the work through the kinetic energy of the high-pressure jet rather than through any chemical action.

Operating pressures span a wide range depending on the application:

  • Low to medium pressure (up to 750 bar): general cleaning, light surface prep, paint stripping on softer substrates
  • High pressure (750 to 1,500 bar): industrial cleaning, boiler tube cleaning, tank cleaning, general surface preparation
  • Ultra-high pressure (1,500 to 2,800 bar and above): heavy surface preparation, hydro demolition, cold cutting, removing stubborn deposits

Boiler tube cleaning

Boilers in sugar refineries, chemical plants, paper mills and power stations accumulate scale, soot and ash on the heat-transfer surfaces. Scale on the water side reduces heat transfer efficiency and pushes up fuel consumption. Ash and soot on the gas side does the same.

Waterjetting cleans boiler tubes inside and out, restoring the heat-transfer surfaces to near-original condition. The standard process during a planned shutdown:

  • Isolation, drain-down and ventilation of the boiler
  • Access setup with platforms or rigging as required
  • Lance and nozzle selection for the tube size and deposit type
  • Systematic cleaning of each tube to specification
  • Inspection of cleaned tubes against the agreed standard
  • Post-clean documentation and handover

The fuel saving from a properly cleaned boiler often pays for the cleaning work within the first month of operation.

Heat exchangers, tanks and drains

Heat exchangers and economisers accumulate fouling on the heat-transfer surfaces. Waterjetting is the standard method for tube bundles in most process industries. Process tanks, storage tanks and vessels accumulate scale, sludge, polymer build-up and product residue, all removed efficiently with rotating nozzle assemblies. Industrial drainage systems are cleared faster and more cleanly than by mechanical augering or chemical dosing.

Surface preparation and coatings

Steel surfaces that need recoating, painting or protective treatment need proper preparation to ensure the new coating bonds correctly. Waterjetting at high pressure removes existing coatings, rust, mill scale and surface contaminants without etching the underlying steel. This produces a surface profile that paint adheres to reliably.

Waterjetting is increasingly the surface prep method of choice in marine, offshore, structural steel and industrial coating applications where dust control and surface integrity matter.

Cold cutting and hydro demolition

At ultra-high pressure with abrasive injection, water can cut through steel, concrete, composites and almost any other material without generating heat. Cold cutting is essential in environments where heat or sparks are unacceptable (refineries, gas plants, explosive atmospheres). It also avoids the metallurgical damage that thermal cutting can introduce.

Ultra-high-pressure water can remove concrete from a structure without damaging the steel reinforcement underneath. Hydro demolition is used in repair of bridges, dams, marine structures, water-retaining structures and any reinforced concrete where the rebar must be preserved. The technique is more precise and less structurally disruptive than mechanical breaking.
