Shamwari Private Game Reserve is a 25,000 hectare malaria free reserve in the Eastern Cape near Paterson, where five of South Africa's nine biomes converge. Accommodation is spread across six lodges and an explorer camp, each positioned differently in the landscape, some above open plains and others in riverine bush near water where game gathers, with generous suites and private decks. Activities cover Big Five game drives, bush walks, birding, spa treatments and wildlife experiences, and children aged three and over are welcome on game drives. The reserve was created by restoring land stripped by agriculture back to its original biodiversity, and that work continues through the Shamwari Foundation, which runs wildlife rehabilitation and anti-poaching programmes that guests can learn about during a stay.
