Diamond Microdermabrasion: The Monthly Facial Add-On That Changes Skin
If your skin feels dull, your pores look larger than they used to, or your skincare products are not penetrating the way they did a year ago, the issue is almost always one thing: dead skin cell buildup. Diamond microdermabrasion fixes it in 30 minutes, with no chemicals, no needles and no recovery time. It is the single most cost-effective add-on we offer at the clinic, and the one most clients underestimate.
How it works
A diamond-tipped handpiece passes over the skin while a controlled vacuum lifts away the exfoliated outer layer. Unlike older crystal-based devices, diamond microdermabrasion produces no airborne particles, making it cleaner, more precise, and safer for sensitive skin and the eye area.
The therapist adjusts suction strength to match your skin's tolerance. Strong enough to make a real difference, gentle enough that you walk out without redness. Around the delicate eye area, finer diamond tips and lower suction protect the thinner skin while still delivering useful exfoliation.
What it treats
- Congested skin and blocked pores
- Blackheads and visible open pores
- Mild acne scarring
- Pigmentation and uneven tone
- Fine lines and early ageing
- Sun damage and age spots
- Rough texture from environmental exposure
- Dull, lifeless complexion
The hidden benefit: product penetration
Microdermabrasion strips away the dead skin barrier that blocks active ingredients. Anything you apply afterwards - serums, retinol, moisturisers - penetrates dramatically better. That is why we recommend pairing it with your Dermalogica facial or scheduling it the day before you start a new active product. Studies on transdermal absorption show post-microdermabrasion product uptake can increase by a factor of three to five over untreated skin.
How often?
Once a month is the sweet spot. After three to four monthly sessions, most clients report visibly smoother texture, brighter tone, and a measurable reduction in pore size. Skin renewal cycles run roughly 28 days, so monthly treatments lock in the gains. Faster cadence (every two weeks) is occasionally recommended for clients with very congested skin during the first month, after which the schedule eases to monthly maintenance.
What a session feels like
Most clients describe a mild scratching or sandpaper sensation as the diamond tip passes over the skin, accompanied by a steady gentle suction. No pain, no recovery, no redness beyond a brief flush that fades within an hour. Most clients book the appointment over a lunch break and return to work immediately.
What to expect after
Skin feels smoother to the touch the same day. By day two or three, the renewed surface starts looking visibly brighter. By the end of the first week, makeup applies more evenly and skincare products feel more effective. Cumulative results build over three to four monthly sessions.
Pairing microdermabrasion with other treatments
Microdermabrasion sits at the foundation of most skincare programmes. It is most powerful when combined intelligently with:
- Dermalogica facials - microdermabrasion immediately before allows the facial actives to penetrate to maximum effect
- LED light therapy - red and near-infrared light works deeper after the dead-cell layer has been removed
- Microneedling - microdermabrasion is best avoided in the same week as microneedling, but in alternating cycles they complement each other well
- Chemical peels - usually paired with caution: a peel after microdermabrasion needs gentler acid concentrations to avoid irritation
Who should skip it
Active inflammatory acne, eczema flares, cold sores, and uncontrolled diabetes are contraindications. Our therapists assess at the consultation. Other temporary contraindications:
- Recent sunburn
- Active rosacea flare
- Open wounds or cuts in the treatment area
- Recent isotretinoin (Roaccutane) use - six-month wait
- Recent injectable treatments - 14-day wait
- Pregnancy with practitioner approval only, and at lower intensity
Microdermabrasion versus chemical exfoliation
Microdermabrasion is mechanical exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation - AHAs, BHAs, or in-clinic peels - works on a different principle (loosening the bonds between dead cells rather than physically scrubbing them away). Both have their place. Microdermabrasion is more controllable, predictable and immediately satisfying. Chemical exfoliation reaches further into the skin and can address pigmentation more aggressively. Most established skincare programmes use both, in alternating sessions.
Home care between sessions
The professional treatment is the catalyst, but the daily routine is what holds the gains. The minimum support routine after microdermabrasion:
- Daily broad-spectrum SPF 50 on the face, neck and chest
- A gentle, sulphate-free cleanser
- Vitamin C serum in the morning
- A retinoid or peptide serum at night, gradually introduced
- A barrier-supporting moisturiser
Our therapists dispense Dermalogica, Lamelle and Heliocare - the brands we actually use on clients in chair, with proven track records on South African skin.
Realistic expectations
Microdermabrasion is a refining and brightening treatment, not a transformative single-session intervention. Clients chasing dramatic single-session change are better directed to deeper resurfacing options such as BioRePeel or microneedling. Microdermabrasion is the consistent, monthly, no-downtime treatment that keeps skin in good condition over the long term.
