Laser Hair Removal in Pretoria: Why Skin Type Matters

Laser hair removal sounds simple - point a laser at the hair, hair goes away - but the technology behind it matters enormously, especially for clients with darker skin. The wrong wavelength on the wrong skin type causes burns, hyperpigmentation, paradoxical hair growth, or simply does not work at all. Choosing a clinic is largely choosing a laser, and that decision should be made before you book.

Why diode lasers win for South African skin

South Africa's skin tone diversity demands more than a one-size-fits-all device. The science: diode lasers operate around 808 nm, a wavelength that targets the melanin in the hair shaft while leaving the surrounding skin largely untouched, particularly when the surface is being cooled actively during the pulse. Older alexandrite (755 nm) and ruby lasers cannot make this trade-off as cleanly on darker skin. IPL devices (intense pulsed light) emit a broad spectrum of wavelengths and rely on filters to approximate the result - they work, but with less precision and a narrower margin of safety on Fitzpatrick V and VI.

What "permanent" actually means

Laser hair removal targets the melanin in the hair shaft to disable the follicle. Hair grows in cycles - anagen (active), catagen (transition), and telogen (rest) - and only follicles in the active phase respond to treatment. That is why six to eight sessions, spaced four to six weeks apart, is standard for full-body areas. Maintenance every six to twelve months keeps results long-term.

"Permanent reduction" is the technical claim. Realistic outcomes after a full course: 80 to 95 percent reduction in active hair growth. The remaining hairs are typically finer, lighter and slower-growing, and respond to occasional maintenance sessions.

What you can expect

  • Underarms: 10 minutes per session
  • Bikini or Brazilian: 15 to 20 minutes
  • Full legs: 45 to 60 minutes
  • Full back or chest: 30 to 45 minutes
  • Face (chin and upper lip): 5 to 10 minutes

Most clients describe the sensation as a warm rubber band snap, far less intense than older IPL devices. The Crystal Freeze technology delivers contact cooling at minus 10°C right at the treatment head, so the heat from the laser pulse is buffered immediately. Most areas need no anaesthetic.

Pre-treatment preparation

  • Shave the area 12 to 24 hours before treatment - the laser targets the follicle, not the visible hair, and stubble at the surface absorbs energy that should reach the bulb
  • No waxing, plucking or threading for at least four weeks before the first session - these methods remove the follicle the laser needs to target
  • No sun exposure or fake tan for two weeks before treatment - tanned skin has elevated melanin at the surface, which competes with the follicle for laser energy
  • Avoid certain photosensitising medications - check with our therapists during consultation
  • Clean skin on the day - no deodorant, lotion or oils on the area

What happens during a session

The therapist confirms the treatment area, applies a thin layer of contact gel, and treats the area in a grid pattern. The handpiece glides smoothly across the skin, with audible pulses every fraction of a second. Cooling continues throughout. Mild redness and pinkness in the follicle openings (perifollicular oedema) is normal and settles within hours.

Post-treatment care

  • SPF 50 daily on any treated facial or exposed area for the next two weeks
  • No hot showers, gym sessions or saunas for 24 hours
  • Avoid swimming pools (chlorine) for 48 hours
  • Hairs may appear to "grow" in the days after treatment - this is dead hair shedding through the follicle, not regrowth
  • Avoid waxing or plucking between sessions - shaving only

Who should avoid it

Laser hair removal is not suitable during pregnancy, on tanned skin, over recent tattoos, or for clients on certain photosensitising medications. Our therapists run a thorough consultation before your first session.

Specific contraindications:

  • Active herpes simplex outbreaks at the treatment site
  • Recent isotretinoin (Roaccutane) use - typically a six-month wait
  • Very recent sun exposure or sunburn
  • Hormonal conditions causing hirsutism without medical management
  • Light blonde, white, grey or red hair - low melanin content limits laser absorption, and these hair types respond poorly

Hormonal hair growth and PCOS

Clients with polycystic ovary syndrome or other hormonal conditions can absolutely benefit from laser hair removal, but the underlying condition continues to drive new follicle activation. A realistic conversation upfront is important: the lasered hairs are gone, but new follicles may appear. Maintenance every three to six months keeps the area clear.
